New Animal Shelter
Updates, Scope of Project
In January of 2015, the Humane Society of Mason County purchased 5 acres of property with plans to eventually build office space and an animal shelter. The property is between Belfair and Allyn, on North Mason School Road behind the High School and practice field.
There have been some setbacks with this project that have slowed the progress due to permitting with Mason County as well as with the potential of the Belfair Bypass planning affecting the property. We have worked through these issues and are moving forward. As of late 2020 the property has been surveyed, a well installed, property cleared and hydro seeded to prevent erosion, and fenced. In March 2021 we entered into an agreement with Shelter Planners of America (SPOA) to start the process of a needs assessment study and conceptual design of our shelter. In early July, Mike, the President of Shelter Planners of America, came on sight to see the layout of our property. In late July the Executive Committee of the Board met with Mike to answer a series of questions to determine the needs of the community so that the conceptual design of our new shelter can be completed. As of November 2021 the needs assessment study has been completed. Currently SPOA is working on a conceptual design for our shelter. The plan is to build in phases as this is a large task to take on and an expensive one. Phase 1 would be administrative areas and Phase 2 the animal housing and support areas. We are happy to be working with SPOA as we continue to move forward with our shelter project. If you are interested in reading the preliminary needs assessment click here. We are excited about this project as it has been many years in the making and we welcome any volunteers interested in helping us raise funds or contribute their building expertise toward reaching this goal. in |
