New Animal Shelter
Updates, Scope of Project
In January of 2015, the Humane Society of Mason County purchased 5 acres of property with plans to eventually build office space and an animal shelter. The property is between Belfair and Allyn, on North Mason School Rd. behind the High School and practice field.
This has been a long process just to get to this point. The plan has been to build in stages as building a shelter to serve the community and animals of Mason County is a large task to take on and an expensive one. So far, a survey of the property has been completed, a well has been installed, initial septic plans reviewed, as well as electrical infrastructure approved by PUD#3.
There have been some setbacks with this project that have slowed the progress due to permitting with Mason County as well as with the potential of the Belfair Bypass planning affecting the property. We have worked through these issues and are moving forward. In July 2020 we began some clearing of the property with plans to have a local excavation company finish clearing all the property by end of August. Our next steps are to install a driveway access, fence it off for security and safety, install electrical infrastructure, and get the well activated. After these items are completed, we can move on to site planning and initial building design work.
We are excited about this project as it has been many years in the making and we welcome any volunteers interested in helping us raise funds or contribute their building expertise toward reaching this goal.
Update, August 2020:
We are happy to share that since our last update, we have since completed the clearing on our property. Next steps include adding fencing and hydro seeding to prevent erosion and keep the scotch broom from coming back. Please see the pictures below of the clearing progress, and check back soon for more updates!
