ADOPTION PROCESS

In order to move forward with an adoption, you’ll need to submit an application.
Submitting your application ahead of time allows us to get to know you, answer any questions you may have, and offer recommendations for cats who might be a potential match. Plus, once you find your kitty love, having your application already on file will allow you to move forward more quickly.
STEP 1
Read through our Pet Adoption Guide

STEP 2
Submit an adoption application - CAT or DOG

STEP 3
An adoption counselor will call to learn more about you and what you’re looking for in a pet

STEP 4
Once pre-approved, go to any of the four locations above to meet cats and fall in love

STEP 5
Once you’ve found a cat you’re interested in and you're pre-approved, our team will help guide you through the next steps based on where the cat is currently located. Some locations may allow same-day adoptions, while others may require a short hold or scheduled pick-up. We’ll make sure you know what to expect and how to prepare to bring your new pet home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect from the phone call with the adoption counselor?
At HSMC, we are passionate about connecting adoptable pets with pet lovers who are looking to add to their families! During this phone conversation, your Adoption Counselor wants to get to know you better. How do you spend your days, and how would you like a pet to fit into your life? Do you work long hours and want a crash buddy when you get home? Are you the adventurous type who wants to train your cat on a leash and harness so you can take them hiking? Do you have young children or dogs at home that we want to make sure your new pet is compatible with? Is this your first pet as an adult? Already have a pet at home and wondering how to introduce them with your new pet? Your Adoption Counselor is an excellent resource, so ask them all your questions!
I met the cat before submitting an adoption application. Can i still apply?
Absolutely! We encourage people to apply in advance because doing so increases your odds of being able to adopt the specific pet you’ve fallen in love with, but you’re welcome to submit an application after you’ve met your kitty love. Just remember that it might take a few days for our small volunteer team to contact you.
I'm in love and cannot imagine another moment without my new kitty. can I take them home today?
If you are 1) already pre-approved, 2) find your kitty at the HSMC adoption center in Belfair and 3) everyone agrees that you and the kitty are a great match, then YES! You may take your kitty home the day you meet them.

However, if you have not yet been pre-approved (get that application in early!) or the cat you want to adopt is at PetSmart, Valley Feed or Ziggy’s Cat Lounge, you likely won’t be able to take them home the same day. However, in most cases, you should be able to take them home within a day or two.

Cats at Ziggy's are available to go home Sunday evening or Monday morning. An Adoption Counselor will communicate with Valley Feed and PetSmart to arrange your pick up, which may take during that business' open hours.

Is there a fee to visit the cats? Do I need to submit an application in order to meet cats?
You’re welcome to spend time with the kitties with or without having submitted an application. There is no fee for visits to HSMC, Valley Feed and PetSmart. There is a fee to visit with the cats at Ziggy’s Cat Lounge. Keep in mind that Ziggy’s relies on your business to keep their doors open. Through our partnership with them, over 600 cats have been adopted so far. Thanks for supporting this business that does so much for our animals!
what is the cost to adopt from HSMC? What does that include?
In conjunction with Clear The Shelters during the month of August, the adoption fee for adult and juvenile cats is $62.50. Kittens are $125. If you adopt two kittens together, the second kitten’s adoption fee is $62.50 (making the adoption fee for both kittens $187.50). Dogs are $250 unless otherwise noted.

All of our adoptable pets have been spayed/neutered. They are microchipped and current on age-appropriate vaccines. For cats, this includes rabies and FVRCP. Our dogs receive the rabies and DHPP vaccines. Some kittens and puppies are too young to receive the rabies vaccine, which cannot be administered until the animal is at least 12 weeks old. Once adopted, you’ll want to take your pet to your own vet to continue any needed vaccines and for all their health care needs. All pets have received medications for parasites.
I want to get my home set up for my new pet but am not sure where to start.
You’ll find recommendations for supplies in our Pet Adoption Guide. Additionally, our Adoption Counselors are great resources. Feel free to ask them all your questions during your phone call with them.
i have another cat at home. how do i know if the new cat will be compatible? how do I introduce them so they'll become friends?
Animals are individuals with unique preferences and play styles. Your Adoption Counselor will chat with you about cats that might be a logical companion for your cat at home based on how they each like to spend their days. Slowly introducing the cats will help ensure a successful transition, though this could take weeks or even months. Some cats simply do not want to engage with other cats and would prefer to be your one and only. Our Welcoming Home Your New Pet guide offers recommendations for introductions.
i want to adopt two cats that are already friends. can you advise me which cats to consider?
Introducing two cats can certainly take time, and not all cats want a feline companion.  Adopting two at the same time who are already friends is a great way to fill your house with kitty love! Your Adoption Counselor will be happy to chat with you about cat friends who would love to be adopted together.
I've heard that it's better to adopt kittens in pairs. why is that?
Kittens under six months need another kitten or young cat to engage in play with them. Why? Because humans and other animals simply cannot provide the type of play that kittens need for social development, no matter how much we try to replicate it. Cats have a natural instinct to bite, scratch and pounce. Being able to play with another young, compatible cat helps them learn boundaries. And this is just one big reason why two kittens are better than one. You can read more in this article by Kitten Lady.

HSMC requires kittens under 6 months to go home with a compatible feline friend.

Good news! During the month of August, if you adopt two kittens from us, the second kitten’s adoption fee is reduced 50%. Now is a great time to adopt!
How are these adoption discounts funded? how can I help?
Adoption fees help us recoup some (only a small amount, really) of the expense we incur caring for animals before they are adopted. Care for all our animals includes a vet exam, antiparasitics, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, vaccines, food and other supplies. Many animals come to us with illnesses, injuries, and/or other health problems that require diagnostics (various tests), medications, and sometimes additional surgeries. We believe that adoption fees should be affordable, and we already offer some of the lowest fees in our area. Unfortunately, Clear the Shelters does not reimburse us for the revenue lost when we apply adoption discounts. However, given the number of animals currently available for adoption, we know that helping pets find their new homes quickly is worth the loss in income. If you're interested in contributing towards our adoption efforts, please visit our Donate Page. We greatly appreciate your support!
