Working Together: Intakes & Adoptions

You've heard people say, "It's kitten season!," and that is true, but the reality is that at this time of year, intakes are very high for many reasons.
  • Animals are giving birth, creating a massive influx of babies needing care. Some of these babies will remain in foster homes for months before they are healthy and mature enough to be available for adoption.

  • Pets are surrendered for various reasons, including moving, health issues or death of the owner, financial struggles, a family member  developing allergies, or the pet is simply no longer wanted.

  • Animals are found wandering around in this gorgeous summer weather, either lost, abandoned, or on a walk-about. The number of calls received for found pets increases tremendously this time of year.
Every day someone contacts us for support, and sadly, many of those animals need more than just basic medical care, like Sherman who arrived with a very severe upper respiratory infection.

Let us be clear. We want people to reach out to us. We are here for you. We are here to help our community's animals.

Celebrate with us!

Given that almost all our animals live in foster homes, how is it possible that we can continue accepting animals into our care every week?

The answer: ADOPTIONS

During the past four weeks, 102 animals have come into our program and 115 have been adopted.

This is incredible!

When you adopt from HSMC, you make room for another animal who desperately needs us. And believe us when we say that the need right now is significant.

Now is a great time to adopt!

Throughout the year, PetSmart Charities generously donates to our organization as we meet adoption goals. During National Adoption Week, those donations are DOUBLED!

From July 20-26, dogs adopted through HSMC at PetSmart will result in a $200 donation per dog from PetSmart Charities!

The donations awarded for cats are calculated differently; we receive donations after we meet certain adoption goals. During National Adoption Week, every cat adopted counts as two, so we'll be able to meet our adoption goal more quickly, which means we'll receive our funding sooner!

If you've been thinking of adopting, NOW is a great time! Not only will you enjoy a lifetime with your new best friend, but you'll be helping HSMC raise additional funding that will go a long way in providing care!

Meet your adoptions team!

Did you know that all of our adoption counselors are volunteers?

When you submit an adoption application, it goes straight to our adoption counselors. One of them will give you a call to learn more about the type of animal you're looking for and help you find your new best friend.

Your adoption counselor is a great resource and can offer suggestions for the type of litter your kitty might need, how to safely introduce your new pet with your current ones, fun ideas for kitty enrichment, and so much more!

Sheri - If you're interested in adopting a dog, you'll most likely speak to Sheri! Not only is Sheri our primary dog adoption counselor, but she is also one of our superhero fosters who cares for large litters of puppies, moms and babies, kittens and more! Anytime the staff need assistance for pretty much anything, Sheri is quick to raise her hand.

Wendy - Wendy is one of our two primary cat adoption counselors. She devotes time just about every day of the week to helping adopters find their purrfect match! Wendy is a regular volunteer at our adoption center at PetSmart in Silverdale, and she safely transports kitties from rescue partners into our care.

Michele - Our other primary cat adoption counselor is Michele. On any given day, you'll find Michele talking with potential adopters, transporting cats from HSMC to PetSmart, and continuously fostering an array of dogs, cats, kittens and puppies, including bottle babies. Michele is a non-stop force of good!

Laura - Our floater Laura helps out wherever she's needed, so you might speak with her if you're adopting a dog or a cat! Her primary volunteer roles include overseeing our PetSmart adoption center, organizing our adoption events, producing content for our social media and website, and helping to support our new fosters. Plus she fosters both dogs and cats as often as she's able.

Kimberly - Not pictured here, Kimberly is our TNR expert. She's called in to chat with anyone interested in working cats. Though we always try to place cats in loving indoor homes, we recognize that the indoor life isn't for every cat. To an unsocialized cat who is used to the outdoors, being forced to stay inside would be terrifying. Kimberly works with our adopters to properly and safely transition the cats to their new territory.

Adorable Adoptable

This cutie is Betty! While she may be just a little shy at first meet, Betty will warm up and melt your heart. She is food motivated and happy to be cuddled and sit in your lap. Her eyes tell a soulful story that nobody knows.

Betty would do best with another dog friend her size as she has only known communal living, however this is not a requirement. She is still working on house training, is crate trained and working on leash manners.

Betty is a lovely lady who will be such a wonderful companion!

June is such a gentle, sweet little girl. She and her sisters were quite nervous when they first came into our care, but their true personalities are really starting to shine!

These kitties LOVE to play! They chase each other around the play room at PetSmart, batting balls and attacking feathers.

June and her pals would appreciate a calm home where they can warm up at their own pace. Once comfortable, they are the sweetest, most playful little girls!
